As a UNESCO Co-Chair in Indigenous-Led Research, she focuses on biodiversity conservation, Indigenous health, and community-based natural resource management. Her work emphasizes collaborative methodologies with Indigenous communities globally. She leads the NFRF-funded Ărramăt project (2022-2027) and the SSHRC-funded Tracking Change initiative (2011-2019), exploring local and traditional knowledge in watershed governance. Parlee holds a PhD from the University of Manitoba and has authored over 150 publications, including co-editing Resources and Sustainable Development in the Arctic (2018).
Her research integrates Indigenous knowledge systems with ecological science, addressing issues like caribou conservation, Arctic resource development impacts, and climate change adaptation. She has advised the IPBES Assessment on Wild Species and contributed to the Canadian Mountain Assessment. Parlee’s projects frequently involve partnerships with Indigenous nations and governments to strengthen community monitoring and adaptive governance.
Key themes in her work include: (1) Indigenous-led conservation strategies, (2) participatory research methodologies, (3) resource development’s socio-ecological impacts, and (4) freshwater and food systems resilience. Her current projects expand biocultural approaches to conservation and explore youth engagement in climate action.
