Brecht Cardoen serves as Senior Lecturer at KU Leuven's Faculty of Economics and Business and Partner/Senior Lecturer in Technology and Operations Management at Vlerick Business School. He directs the joint Doctorate in Management (PhD) program across Vlerick, Ghent University, and KU Leuven, following visiting professorships at Cambridge (2012) and Western Ontario (2017).
He earned his PhD in Applied Sciences from KU Leuven (2009) with research on surgical scheduling optimization in hospitals.
His work pioneers value-based healthcare frameworks through operations management methodologies, focusing on cost variability analysis and value measurement across clinical domains. Key methodologies include time-driven activity-based costing (TDABC) and data envelopment analysis (DEA) to quantify patient value and resource utilization in hospital settings.
Publication trends reveal consistent application of operations research to healthcare costing, spanning orthopedics, oncology, and dermatology through systematic reviews, prospective clinical trials, and disease-specific cost analyses—all converging on value optimization in medical treatments.
As principal investigator, he leads major grants including 'Determining patient value in multiple disease domains via DEA' (2021-2025) and 'Cost variability in medical treatments' (2020-2023), while supervising PhD candidates like Elena Roman in cost variability research.
He contributes to KU Leuven's Production and Logistics Research Group and iSi Health institute, advancing physics-based modeling for in silico healthcare solutions through interdisciplinary collaboration.
