معرفی
Brant Carlson is an Associate Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Carthage College, joining in Fall 2012. His research focuses on atmospheric electricity, lightning phenomena, and terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs). He holds a Ph.D. in Physics from Stanford University (2009) and a B.S. in Physics from the California Institute of Technology (2005).
Education:
- Ph.D. in Physics, Stanford University, 2009
- Bachelor of Science in Physics, California Institute of Technology, 2005
Research Interests: Prof. Carlson investigates mechanisms of TGF production, electric field remote sensing, and effects of gamma-ray bursts on VLF radio signals. His work involves modeling lightning-associated gamma rays and comparing observations from satellites, ground stations, and aircraft. He also explores plasma physics and electromagnetic wave phenomena.
Awards & Recognition:
- Stanford Benchmark Fellowship (2005–2008)
- Sigma Xi Award for Excellence in Research (Caltech)
- Kothari Prize for Outstanding Undergraduate Thesis (Caltech)
Teaching & Outreach: Taught courses in Introductory Plasma Physics and Electromagnetic Waves. Led undergraduate research projects at Stanford on low-noise electronics and autonomous drone development. Conducted outreach programs for K-12 students on electric sparks and lightning.
