Brannon Costello is the Barbara Womack Alumni Professor and James F. Cassidy Professor of English at Louisiana State University’s College of Humanities & Social Sciences. His work bridges southern studies and comics studies, with a focus on American literature. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee.
Research interests include intersections of southern identity, graphic narratives, and cultural history. Notable publications include Neon Visions: The Comics of Howard Chaykin (2017, Charles Hatfield Prize winner) and Plantation Airs (2007). He co-edited The Other 1980s (2021) and Comics and the U.S. South (2012). Current projects explore Swamp Thing through ecocriticism and seriality studies.
He has served on the executive committees of the International Comic Arts Forum and the Society for the Study of Southern Literature. As Associate Editor of Inks: The Journal of the Comics Studies Society, he promotes interdisciplinary scholarship. Teaching spans contemporary southern fiction, 1980s comics, and American literary classics.
