Dr. Brandon Sawyer is a Professor of Kinesiology and Biology at Point Loma Nazarene University, where he also serves as Chair of the Department of Kinesiology and Associate Dean of Operations for the College of Health Sciences. With a Ph.D. in Physical Activity Nutrition and Wellness from Arizona State University, he brings extensive expertise in exercise physiology to his academic and administrative roles.
- Education: Ph.D. from Arizona State University, M.Ed. from University of Virginia, B.A. from PLNU
- Professional background: Former athletic trainer for the San Diego Chargers, high schools, PLNU, and an arena football team
Dr. Sawyer's research focuses on exercise physiology, with particular emphasis on maximal exercise performance metrics (VO2max, critical power, exercise economy), vascular function during exercise, and obesity-related exercise physiology. His current research projects at PLNU include investigating the physiology of high-intensity interval exercise and addressing weight stigma and bias within the university community.
His scholarly work demonstrates consistent contributions to the understanding of exercise performance and physiology, with recent publications examining menstrual cycle effects on exercise, blood flow characteristics during different exercise intensities, and walking economy in relation to body composition. His research collaborations frequently involve colleagues from Arizona State University, particularly with Dr. Glenn A. Gaesser.
Dr. Sawyer has received recognition through his extensive publication record with over 50 publications and nearly 1000 citations, reflecting significant impact in the fields of exercise physiology and sports medicine.
- Key research areas: Exercise performance testing, HIIT vs MICT comparisons, vascular adaptations to exercise
- Current investigations: Physiology of high-intensity interval exercise, weight stigma interventions
As an educator, Dr. Sawyer teaches a wide range of courses including Human Physiology I & II, Physiology of Exercise, Advanced Exercise Physiology for the MS in Kinesiology program, and Medical Physiology for the Physician Assistant program. His teaching philosophy emphasizes connecting theoretical knowledge with practical applications in athletic training and clinical settings.
