Dr. Bradley Ambrose is a Professor of Physics at Grand Valley State University's Department of Physics within the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Washington and has been teaching since 1999, focusing on inquiry-based methods to enhance student conceptual understanding. His research in Physics Education Research (PER) centers on advanced mechanics and quantum physics, with a strong emphasis on developing and evaluating innovative curricula like the Tutorials in Intermediate Mechanics. He has mentored numerous undergraduates in research projects and secured grants totaling over $75,000. His awards include the 2006 Pew Teaching Excellence Award and the 2009 Presidential Teaching Initiative Award.
Education: Ph.D. (1999), MS (1993), and BS (1991) in Physics from the University of Washington and Yale University, respectively.
Research investigates student conceptual challenges in upper-division physics, particularly in mechanics and quantum mechanics. He collaborates on national projects and presents at conferences, advocating for evidence-based teaching practices. His work bridges theory and application, emphasizing active learning and peer collaboration.
Grants include NSF support for tutorial development and teaching reforms for pre-service K-8 educators. He serves as President of the Michigan Section of the AAPT and co-chaired Gordon Research Conferences on physics education and computation.
