Bradford Powell

Bradford Powell, MD, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Genetics at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. He holds dual appointments in Genetics and Medicine-Hematology. His research focuses on applying data science to clinical genome sequencing, including diagnostic workflows for pediatric and prenatal cases, and developing structured data models for genetic evidence (e.g., ClinGen initiative). He also serves as Director of the Genetics Coil for medical students and mentors residents in the Clinical Genetics residency program. Clinically, he is board-certified in Clinical Genetics and Pediatrics, practicing in Adult Genetics, Cancer Genetics, and Pediatric Cancer Genetics clinics at UNC Health. His work bridges translational research and clinical practice, emphasizing the integration of genomic data into patient care.

His key projects include scalable diagnostic exome sequencing protocols for pediatric neurology and fetal anomalies, and advancing standardized representation of genetic variant evidence.
