Brad Evans is a Professor of Political Violence & Aesthetics and founding Director of the Centre for the Study of Violence at the University of Bath’s Politics, Languages & International Studies department. Previously, he held roles at the University of Bristol, University of Leeds, and Columbia University. His research focuses on political violence, disappearance, and the intersections of art and pedagogy. Notable projects include the State of Disappearance initiative, which explores the weaponization of disappearance through art exhibitions, workshops, and conferences. He has co-curated Chantal Meza’s State of Disappearance collection at Bath, reshaping educational practices. Evans’ work addresses global violence dynamics, post-industrial socioeconomic challenges, and the ethical dimensions of research methodologies.
Research Interests: Evans examines disappearance as a political tool, the role of art in witnessing atrocities, and the moral and pedagogical implications of violence. His projects blend critical theory with practical engagement, linking academic research to public discourse. Recent work analyzes Brexit’s sociopolitical impacts and the historical legacy of Welsh deindustrialization.
Grants & Collaborations: He leads the ESRC-funded project ‘State of Disappearance’ (2025), exploring disappearance’s global psychological control mechanisms. Collaborations span international scholars, artists, and institutions. His over 150 academic outputs include award-winning books and articles in Unherd, Philosophy, and Bloomsbury.
Labs/Teams: Directs the Centre for the Study of Violence, fostering interdisciplinary research on global violence, memory, and resistance.
