Brad C. Bennett is an Associate Professor in the Biological and Environmental Sciences Department at Samford University's Howard College of Arts and Sciences. His research integrates molecular biology, biochemistry, and bioinformatics to study bacterial physiology, focusing on probiotics, antibiotic resistance evolution, and NAD metabolism.
Education:
- B.S. in Biology, University of Tennessee-Chattanooga
- Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology, University of Tennessee-Knoxville
Research Focus: Dr. Bennett investigates microbial adaptation mechanisms through projects on:
- Antibiotic resistance evolution in probiotic bacteria
- Convergence vs. contingency in microbial selection pressures
- Functional characterization of NiaP proteins in vitamin B3 transport
- Spider venom gland transcriptomics (Ctenus hibernalis)
Collaborations:
- McWhorter School of Pharmacy (Samford): Health effects of probiotics
- Biology Department (Samford): Environmental antibiotic resistance gene mapping
Teaching: Courses include Foundations of Biology I, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, and Microbiology labs. He's developing a Food Microbiology and Human Microbiome special topics course.
