Boya Harizanova

Boya Harizanova is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Pre-Production and Production, Faculty of Screen Arts, National Academy of Theatre and Film 'Krustyo Sarafov'. She holds a PhD in directing (2023) and has worked as an assistant director at the Academy for seven years. Her career spans 20 years as a screenwriter, editor, and director for BNT, Btv, and Nova Television.

Her research interests focus on documentary filmmaking, feature film direction, and screenwriting with emphases on Balkan cultural narratives and cinematic storytelling techniques. Her work explores themes like post-communist trauma, identity crises, and institutional critique through innovative visual approaches.

Recent film projects include documentaries like CINEMA EXTREMISTS (2023) and A FEELING OF UNBEARABLENESS (2018), which have screened at over 30 international festivals and won 12 major awards including Golden Rhyton and Pula Film Festival accolades. Her narrative films like GIFT (2020) and EXAM (2017) blend social commentary with experimental aesthetics.
