Dr. Bouke van Gorp is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Human Geography and Spatial Planning at Utrecht University's Faculty of Geosciences. He is also coordinator of the Bachelor's degree program in Social Geography and Planning, responsible for curriculum renewal since 2021. His research focuses on cultural geography, tourism, heritage, and the role of fieldwork in education. He holds a PhD from Utrecht University (2003) and has been actively involved in educational innovation, including Honors programs and inclusive fieldwork practices.
Research interests include representation in tourism imagery, the educational value of fieldwork, and heritage conservation strategies in post-colonial cities. His work bridges theoretical geography with practical educational methodologies. Recent studies explore place identity through video documentaries and the impact of global events like Snowden revelations on geopolitical discourse.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on Geography, Representation & Media and The Battle for Space. He collaborates internationally on projects involving climate change education and urban regeneration. Over 20 years of academic output includes 40+ peer-reviewed articles and books, with a focus on education innovation and cultural geography.
