Dr. Borna Bonakdarpour is an Associate Professor of Neurology specializing in Behavioral Neurology at the Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University. He is affiliated with the Mesulam Center for Cognitive Neurology and Alzheimer's Disease and leads the Laboratory for Interventions and Neuroimaging of Cognition (LINC). His clinical work is based at Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he sees patients at the Arkes Family Pavilion.
Dr. Bonakdarpour's educational background includes:
- MD from Tehran University of Medical Sciences (2000)
- Internship in Medicine at University of Arizona College of Medicine (2009)
- Residency in Neurology at University of Arizona College of Medicine (2012)
- Postdoctoral Fellowship in Aphasia and Neurolinguistics at Northwestern University (2014)
- Board Certified in Neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology
Dr. Bonakdarpour specializes in cognitive neurology with a primary research focus on language disorders and music-based interventions. His work centers on understanding the neurobiology of language impairment in aphasia and developing network-based interventions. He also investigates the efficacy and mechanisms of music interventions for cognitive disorders. His research utilizes multimodal neuroimaging to study the neural mechanisms underlying language and cognitive impairments, with the goal of developing effective treatments for aphasia and other cognitive disorders. The Bonakdarpour Lab, also known as the Laboratory for Interventions and Neuroimaging of Cognition (LINC), is home to the Northwestern Music and Medicine Program which focuses on clinical music programs and music and medicine education.
Dr. Bonakdarpour's recent publications demonstrate a clear trajectory in cognitive neurology research, with emphasis on language networks in dementia, music-based interventions for cognitive disorders, and the neural basis of reading disorders. His work bridges clinical neurology with creative therapeutic approaches, particularly using music as a tool for cognitive rehabilitation.
Dr. Bonakdarpour has received numerous scientific awards and research grants, including:
- Research Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (2023)
- Research Grant from the National Institute on Aging (2023)
- Fellow of the American Neurological Association (2022)
- Advocacy Award from the American Music Therapy Association (2020)
- Outstanding Teacher at Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine (2019)
- The Carl and Marie Duncan Award for Memory Disorders Research (2019, 2017)
- Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology (2016)
- Five-year Career Development Award from NIH/NIDCD (2015)
As director of the Bonakdarpour Lab, he oversees multiple research initiatives and has secured substantial funding from diverse sources including federal agencies, university programs, and specialized institutes. His work has resulted in 56 publications to date, with significant contributions to understanding the neural basis of language disorders and the therapeutic potential of music interventions. Dr. Bonakdarpour serves on the editorial board of Frontiers of Human Neuroscience and is actively involved with the Institute for Therapy through the Arts.
The Bonakdarpour Lab, based at the Mesulam Center for Cognitive Neurology and Alzheimer's Disease, comprises research teams focused on language and aphasia, other cognitive disorders, and music-based interventions. The lab utilizes cutting-edge neuroimaging techniques to map brain networks involved in language processing and to evaluate the impact of therapeutic interventions on these networks.
