Boris Yakobson is the Karl F. Hasselmann Chair in Engineering at Rice University, holding joint appointments in the Department of Materials Science and NanoEngineering and the Department of Chemistry within the George R. Brown School of Engineering. His research focuses on theoretical and computational studies of nanomaterials, including carbon nanotubes, graphene, and 2D materials, with applications in energy, electronics, and quantum systems.
Education: Ph.D. in Chemical Physics (1982, Russian Academy of Sciences) and B.S. in Physics & Applied Mathematics (1976, Novosibirsk University).
Research interests include nanotube mechanics, quantum materials, ferroelectric 2D materials, and corrosion science. Notable contributions include pioneering work on nanotube properties and the discovery of novel 2D materials like borophene. Awards include the 2019 Outstanding Faculty Research Award from Rice University and the 2008 Nano 50 Innovator Award.
Advising and grants: Advised doctoral students like Nicholas Tjahjono, whose work supports NASA’s Artemis mission. Collaborates on projects funded by agencies such as NASA and the Department of Energy.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Yakobson Research Group, conducting computational and theoretical studies on nanomaterials. Active in editorial roles, including the Journal of Nanoparticle Research.
