Prof. Dr. Boris Suchan is a Professor of Clinical Neuropsychology at the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience, Faculty of Psychology, Ruhr University Bochum. He serves as co-director of the Neuropsychological Therapy Centre at the university alongside Prof. Dr. Patrizia Thoma. His academic work focuses on understanding human memory processes, neural mechanisms of face and body processing, and clinical applications for conditions like prosopagnosia and mild cognitive impairment.
Professor Suchan's primary research interests include:
- Neural correlates of human working memory, particularly the central executive system
- Face and body processing in the brain, including prosopagnosia (face blindness)
- Clinical neuropsychology, especially treatment of patients with acquired brain damage
- Development and implementation of therapeutic interventions for mild cognitive impairment in aging
- Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and electroencephalogram (EEG) to study cognitive processes
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on virtual reality-based cognitive training, the neural correlates of attention and memory processes, and interventions for mild cognitive impairment. His work spans multiple domains including clinical neuropsychology, cognitive neuroscience, and rehabilitation science, with particular emphasis on translating research findings into practical therapeutic applications through initiatives like the "go4cognition" program.
Professor Suchan is actively involved in training psychological psychotherapists to become clinical neuropsychologists through the Neuropsychological Therapy Centre. His research group has developed innovative therapy approaches for patients with neurological conditions resulting from stroke or accidents.
His laboratory work utilizes advanced neuroimaging techniques including fMRI and EEG to investigate the neural basis of cognitive processes. The Neuropsychological Therapy Centre serves as both a clinical service for patients with neurological conditions and a research platform for developing and testing new interventions.
