Bonnie Whitener is an Instructor in the Department of English at the University of Alabama, where she teaches composition courses and literature surveys. Her academic specialization focuses on American Gothic literature, particularly texts that subvert traditional Gothic tropes through unconventional female characters. Additional teaching areas include dystopian literature and continental philosophy.
Her research examines how heroines in American Gothic narratives break conventional storytelling rules, creating what she terms the 'American Counter-Gothic.' Current scholarship investigates female characters as cultural scapegoats in early American literature and the intersection of philosophy with literary genres.
