Bonnie Johnson is a Professor and Director of the Urban Planning Program at the University of Kansas's School of Public Affairs and Administration. Her expertise spans planning theory, land use policy, and the ethics of urban planning practice. She teaches courses on planning politics and administration while researching civic bureaucracy, professional ethics, and innovative planning methodologies. Prior to academia, she worked as a city planner in Missouri, designing award-winning neighborhood and land use plans, including Liberty’s Blueprint for Liberty: Land Use Plan, which won an American Planning Association Outstanding Planning Award.
Her research explores how institutions and professional cultures shape public policy, with notable contributions to staff report efficacy, civic capital theory, and comparative ethics frameworks across professions. Johnson has been recognized as a Fellow of the American Institute of Certified Planners (FAICP) and received the 2022 Faculty Teacher of the Year Award.
Her work bridges academic and practical planning challenges, emphasizing equitable community engagement and professional accountability. She leads initiatives to integrate new media and innovative approaches into urban planning processes.
