Bohdan Pomahac

Dr. Bohdan Pomahac is the Frank F. Kanthak Professor of Surgery and Chief of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at Yale School of Medicine. He leads the Face Transplant Program, focusing on facial reconstruction and vascularized composite allotransplantation (VCA). A pioneer in face transplantation, he performed the first three full-face transplants in the U.S. and pioneered bilateral upper extremity transplants in the Northeast. His expertise spans craniofacial surgery, microsurgery, and robotic-assisted techniques. He holds appointments in Surgery and affiliated programs like the Cancer Prevention and Control Center.

Research Interests:

Dr. Pomahac’s research focuses on advancing VCA, perfusion technologies for tissue viability, immunosuppression strategies, and robotic microsurgery. His team explores outcomes in face/hand transplantation, post-transplant bone remodeling, and improving patient quality of life. He also investigates disparities in surgical outcomes and breast reconstruction techniques.
