Bob Wilson is an Instructor in the Department of Community Sustainability at Michigan State University, affiliated with the College of Agriculture & Natural Resources. He holds a BA and MBA from MSU and has been a licensed attorney for 38 years. Wilson currently teaches Environmental Law and Policy at MSU and previously taught at Western Michigan University (WMU). He serves as an adviser to MSU’s Sustainable Business Association.
Wilson’s professional roles include Chairperson of the Michigan Trails Advisory Council (appointed by Governor Whitmer) and former executive director of the Michigan Trails and Greenways Alliance. Over 28 years, he served as Senior Counsel to the Senate Natural Resources and Environmental Affairs Committee, contributing to landmark environmental laws such as the Great Lakes Compact and Michigan Trailways Act.
His research interests focus on environmental policy, trail advocacy, and sustainable community development. Recent academic efforts include collaborative projects with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and initiatives to empower students in trail policy advocacy. Wilson has been recognized as a finalist for the Michigan Governor’s Fitness Award (2021).
Wilson’s personal interests align with his professional work, including cycling, trail running, and open-water marathon swimming. He resides with his wife Cathy (governmental affairs director at Consumers Energy) and their four children, alongside two labradors and a Chesapeake Bay retriever.
