Bob Lemieux is a Professor at the University of Waterloo's Faculty of Science, currently on leave. His research bridges organic synthesis, physical organic chemistry, and condensed matter physics to develop advanced liquid crystal materials for fast-switching ferroelectric and electroclinic LCD applications.
His work focuses on exploiting chirality and structure-property relationships in smectic liquid crystal phases. He leads one of the few global chemistry groups capable of synthesizing and characterizing novel liquid crystal materials for electro-optical and photonic devices.
Recent publications explore molecular design strategies for de Vries-like liquid crystals, axial chirality in smectic phases, and amphiphilic lyotropic materials. Themes include materials science, physical chemistry, and synthetic chemistry, with sub-fields spanning ferroelectricity, nanosegregation, and defect-free LCDs.
