Bo Lennernäs (1963–2021) was a Professor of Medical Science at Örebro University. He held previous academic positions, including Adjunct Senior Lecturer at the University of Gothenburg (2005) and Docent in Medical Science at the University of Gothenburg (2001). His primary affiliation was with Örebro University, where he focused on prostate cancer therapy and radiotherapy innovations. Born in Bollnäs, Sweden, he earned his PhD in Medical Science at Uppsala University in 1996 with a thesis on radiotherapy of prostatic cancer.
- Education
- MD and specialist training in Oncology at Uppsala University
- PhD (1996): Radiotherapy of prostatic cancer – with reference to positioning and three-dimensional dose-planning
His research emphasized improving radiotherapy techniques, such as four-dimensional radiotherapy using electromagnetic positioning systems, and reducing side effects of hormone therapy for prostate cancer patients. He co-developed the pharmaceutical Abstral (for breakthrough pain) with his brother, Professor Hans Lennernäs, and explored applications of medical robotics in healthcare.
Key projects include a Nyckelfonden-funded study on electromagnetic tumor positioning during radiotherapy and a Finland-based trial of localized hormone therapy to minimize systemic side effects. Lennernäs held patents for medical devices and was a pioneer in integrating technology with oncology.
His legacy includes advancing brachytherapy, hormone therapy optimization, and interdisciplinary collaborations in healthcare innovation.
