Bo Huang is a Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), with a joint appointment in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics (School of Medicine). His research focuses on developing advanced microscopy techniques and molecular tools to study subcellular organization, genome regulation, and signaling pathways. A leader in super-resolution microscopy, Huang has pioneered CRISPR imaging and engineered fluorescent probes for live-cell visualization. His work bridges physical biology, protein engineering, and computational methods.
- Education: PhD in Chemistry (Stanford University, 2006), BS in Chemistry (Peking University, 2001)
Research interests include mapping proteome-scale protein localization, understanding phase-separated transcriptional condensates, and studying genomic architecture dynamics. Notable contributions include the development of Label-Retention Expansion Microscopy and the OpenCell platform for endogenous protein tagging.
Recent work explores how cytoplasmic granules organize RAS signaling in cancer and applies AI-driven microscopy for protein localization prediction (CELL-E models). Collaborations span biochemistry, engineering, and computational biology.
- Honors: Packard Fellowship (2010), NIH New Innovator Award (2011), Searle Scholar (2010), UCSF Byers Award (2017)
Labs/Teams: Huang Lab at UCSF, part of QB3 and Chan Zuckerberg Biohub. Active in the 4D Nucleome Project and NIH-funded initiatives.
