Blas Isasi Gutiérrez

Blas Isasi Gutiérrez is an Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a current Henry L. and Natalie E. Freund Fellow at Washington University’s Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts. He holds a BA in Painting from Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú and an MFA in Sculpture from Tulane University, with additional training at the Jan van Eyck Academie in the Netherlands.

His research explores the aesthetics of the Peruvian desert and Andean cosmology, examining how cosmic forces influence modern societal, political, and cultural dynamics. His work bridges art and philosophy, challenging modernist frameworks while highlighting ancestral knowledge systems. Recent projects include “The weight of a gaze (is to listen to the sound of a kilogram)”, leading to a solo exhibition at the Saint Louis Art Museum in 2026.

Awards include the 2024–2025 Freund Fellowship, Joan Mitchell Center residency (2021), and Braunschweig Projects Scholarship (Germany). His exhibitions span Latin America, the U.S., and Europe, including Prospect.6 in New Orleans (2024).

Teaching roles include positions at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, Tulane University, and Washington University in St. Louis. His artistic practice integrates residencies, installations, and collaborative projects addressing global ecological and cultural narratives.
