Blake McLean is an Associate Professor and Director of the post-graduate High Performance Sport program at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). He holds appointments in the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation, with roles including Senior Lecturer (2019–present), Honorary Associate (2018–2019), and Casual Academic (2008–2015). His professional memberships include Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) and the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA), alongside industry accreditations such as Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS).
Blake’s education background is in Human Movement Studies (now Sport and Exercise Science) from UTS. His research focuses on bridging academic and industry collaboration to enhance elite athlete programs through applied sports science and strength & conditioning. Key areas include quantifying physical demands in team sports like basketball and rugby, fatigue management, and optimizing athlete preparation through testing and analytics. He emphasizes using data-driven insights to inform training decisions and has explored topics such as hypoxia’s impact on exercise capacity and decision-making models in high-performance sport.
Blake has received the Young researcher award from ASPETAR Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Hospital in 2013. His funded research includes projects like 'Quantifying the physical demands in basketball' and 'Hypoxia and exercise capacity,' supported by grants such as the 'Optimising Athlete Preparation' collaboration with the GWS Giants Football Club (2024–2025).
In teaching and supervision, Blake leads modules in High Performance Sport, Strength and Conditioning, and Applied Sports Science. He advocates for lifelong learning and innovative educational models that integrate research and practice. Blake also volunteers in sports health initiatives, including roles with Fair Game Australia and Bondi Junction Community Health, promoting community engagement in sports-related health.
