Blain Neufeld is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee (UWM), where he served as Department Chair from 2018 to 2021. He specializes in Political Philosophy, Ethics, and Philosophy of Action, with a focus on public reason, political autonomy, and the application of Rawlsian theory to education and social justice.
Neufeld holds a PhD from the University of Michigan and an MPhil in Politics from the University of Oxford. His research explores the intersection of political liberalism, citizenship education, and egalitarian justice. He is the author of Public Reason and Political Autonomy (Routledge, 2022), which argues that citizens in diverse societies can achieve shared political autonomy through public reasoning.
His recent work addresses topics such as the role of public reason in activism, the ethical treatment of childhood goods within Rawlsian frameworks, and the balance between gender equality and political liberal principles. He critiques non-liberal societies in international relations while advocating for expanded civic education to foster democratic participation.
Neufeld’s publications span journals like Canadian Journal of Philosophy, Philosophical Studies, and Law and Philosophy, reflecting his engagement with contemporary debates on justice, coercion, and ideal theory.
