Björn Marcus Burmann is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Gothenburg. He leads a research group focused on understanding macromolecular protein machines using high-resolution Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. His work spans structural biology, protein dynamics, and molecular mechanisms underlying cellular functions, with a particular emphasis on membrane proteins and chaperones.
He completed his PhD at the University of Bayreuth (Germany) in 2010, studying bacterial transcription-translation coupling via NMR. Postdoctoral research at Biozentrum Basel involved chaperone-substrate complexes. Since 2017, he has been an independent investigator, supported by a Wallenberg Academy Fellowship and Vetenskåradet grants.
His research explores protein folding, membrane protein insertion, and neurodegenerative disease mechanisms (e.g., alpha-synuclein in Parkinson’s). Key areas include BAM/SurA insertase complexes, Tau protein profiling in tauopathies, and mitochondrial protease regulation. Publications highlight NMR-based structural analyses of dynamic protein systems.
Awards include the Wallenberg Academy Fellowship. His lab develops novel NMR techniques for in situ membrane protein analysis and collaborates internationally on projects like outer membrane vesicle preparation and chaperone dynamics.
