Björn Jonson is a Professor of Physics at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, serving part-time since 2011. Previously, he held a full-time Professor position at Chalmers from 1985 to 2008 and was an Assistant at Chalmers (1966-1969). He has worked at CERN as a Scientific Associate (2009-2010), Senior Staff Physicist (1980-1984), Staff Physicist (1976-1980), and Fellow (1972-1974). His career spans nuclear physics, experimental techniques, and international scientific governance.
His research focuses on nuclear physics, particularly radioactivity, beta decay, and exotic decay modes. He pioneered studies on extremely unstable nuclei (nucleon halos), Coulomb excitation, nuclear astrophysics, and neutrino masses. His work involved advanced ISOL techniques, nuclear detection, and magnetic spectrometers.
- Member of The Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters (1988)
- Member of The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (1997)
- Humboldt Research Award (1997)
- Member of The Royal Society of Arts and Sciences in Göteborg (1998)
- Fellow of the Institute of Physics (2001)
Jonson held leadership roles in committees such as the ISOLDE Collaboration Committee, NuPECC, and as Chairman of the Nobel Committee for Physics (2012). He contributed to SPIRAL2, GSI, and CERN governance. His career reflects deep engagement in European nuclear physics and policy-making.
