Björn Högberg is an Associate Professor at the Department of Social Work and affiliated with the Centre for Demographic and Aging Research (CEDAR) at Umeå University. His research focuses on schools' impact on pupil wellbeing, parental unemployment effects on children's health, and educational policy impacts. He holds a Docent qualification.
His research examines how school systems influence mental health outcomes, particularly through stress mechanisms and performance cultures. He also investigates intergenerational effects of parental unemployment on child health using Swedish register data. Key areas include educational reforms' consequences, health disparities among youth, and policy interventions.
Recent work analyzes trends in school-related stress using specification curve and decomposition methods, revealing complex relationships between education systems and wellbeing. His studies often combine register data with large-scale surveys to explore causal pathways in social policy contexts.
