Björn Haglund is an Associate Professor in Child and Youth Studies and Senior Lecturer in Didactics at Gävle University. His research focuses on educational science, particularly in after-school centers, leisure-time pedagogy, and childhood sociology. He currently leads the "The Educational Mission of the Leisure Centre" project, aiming to enhance equity and quality in leisure center operations through research. His work integrates structuration theory, critical discourse analysis, and professional theory to examine policy implementation, pedagogical practices, and institutional dynamics.
Key research interests include:
- Curriculum development in leisure-time centers
- Professional identity and leadership in educational institutions
- Children’s participation and voice in institutional settings
- Policy analysis and institutional reform
Haglund’s publications analyze everyday practices in Swedish school-age educare, focusing on equity challenges, staff perspectives, and the interplay between policy and practice. He emphasizes methodological approaches like walk-and-talk conversations to capture children’s perspectives and discourse analysis to deconstruct institutional narratives.
His collaborative projects bridge academic research with practitioner needs, such as the FriPU initiative uniting researchers and educators. Haglund also contributes to teacher training programs, emphasizing critical thinking and professional development in educational contexts.
