Prof. Bjorn Stevens is the Managing Director of the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology and holds a professorship at the University of Hamburg's Department of Earth System Sciences. His research focuses on atmospheric processes, particularly clouds and their role in climate, including radiative feedbacks, turbulent mixing, and climate modeling. He has led major initiatives like HD(CP)2 and NextGEMS, advancing high-resolution Earth system modeling.
Education: PhD in Atmospheric Science (1996, Colorado State University), MSc and BSc in Electrical Engineering (Iowa State University). Professional experience includes roles at UCLA, NCAR, and leadership in international climate research programs. He has supervised over 25 PhD and 29 master’s students, and his work bridges observational techniques with theoretical climate dynamics.
Research interests include cloud organization, climate sensitivity, and the impact of aerosols on radiative forcing. His publications span climate modeling, cloud dynamics, and Earth system interactions, contributing to global initiatives like EUREC4A and WarmWorld.
