Bjarne Austad

Bjarne Austad is an Associate Professor at the Department of Public Health and Nursing, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at NTNU. His primary affiliation is with NTNU’s medical and health sciences division. He holds a doctoral degree (2017) from NTNU focusing on challenges in guideline adherence in general practice.

Research interests include clinical guideline implementation, telemedicine applications in primary care, doctor-patient communication dynamics, and outcomes of pediatric audiological procedures. He has conducted extensive work on ventilation tube surgery follow-up protocols and e-consultation efficacy during pandemics.

Recent work (2023-2025) focuses on digital health innovations like e-consultations, maternal health in the digital age, and general practitioner workload dynamics. His 2020 study on postoperative ventilation tube care demonstrated non-inferiority of GP-managed follow-ups compared to specialists.

Teaching activities include contributing to the MD4062 outreach program and presenting at conferences like Nidaroskongressen on core values in general practice. He collaborates with institutions like Helse Nord and the Norwegian Institute of Public Health.
