Bjarke Viberg

Bjarke Viberg is a Clinical Professor and consultant in orthopaedic traumatology at Odense University Hospital (OUH), affiliated with the Department of Clinical Research and the Research Unit of Orthopaedic Surgery in Odense. He also holds a position as Visiting Researcher at IRS - Lillebælt Hospital, Research Unit of Orthopaedics in Kolding. His academic base is at the University of Southern Denmark under the Faculty of Health Sciences.

His research is centered on orthopaedic trauma, with a strong focus on fracture epidemiology, treatment outcomes, and clinical decision-making. Key areas include hip and femoral neck fractures, internal fixation versus arthroplasty, reoperation causes, patient-reported outcomes, and rehabilitation strategies. He extensively uses systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and large-scale registry data from the Danish National Patient Register to inform evidence-based practice.

His recent publications (2023–2025) show a consistent trend in high-impact orthopaedic research, particularly in femoral neck fractures, distal radius injuries, and ankle fracture outcomes. Many of his studies employ rigorous methodologies including RCTs, diagnostic accuracy studies, and qualitative assessments, often in multicentre collaborations.

He has received scientific recognition including the 2018 award for research on restrictive blood transfusion in hip fracture patients and the 2014 Oscar prize. These reflect his contributions to improving clinical protocols and patient safety.

Viberg actively supervises research students and leads significant projects such as the national pragmatic RCT comparing arthroplasty and internal fixation for undisplaced femoral neck fractures. He has also contributed to health economic evaluations and interventions like 'Træning For LIvet' aimed at enhancing recovery post-hip fracture.
