Assoc. Prof. Dr. Birten Çelik is affiliated with the Department of History at Middle East Technical University (METU) in Ankara. He holds a PhD from Dokuz Eylül University (1999), an MA from the same institution (1992), and a BA from METU (1988). His research focuses on Ottoman social and political history, modern Turkey, labor history, military history, and the history of Ottoman/Turkish press. He teaches courses such as Ottoman Labor History (19th Century), History of the Turkish Press, and undergraduate research methods.
His work explores topics including Ottoman labor battalions, women’s roles in customs administration, Levantine influences in Ottoman media, and the impact of European revolutions on the Ottoman Empire. Key publications include analyses of the Gallipoli Campaign’s propaganda and studies on early 20th-century Ottoman reforms. He actively contributes to historical archives and educational methodologies in Turkey.
