Birgit Kolboske

Birgit Kolboske is a researcher at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (MPIWG) in Berlin, affiliated with the Department of Knowledge Systems and Collective Life since 2025. Her work bridges the history of science with political science, linguistics, semiotics, and Latin American studies, focusing on gender dynamics and epistemological frameworks.

• MA in Feminist Analysis from Freie Universität Berlin (1995)
• PhD from the University of Leipzig (2022) on women's history in the Max Planck Society

Her current research project, On Misogyny: Feminism, Fetuses, Femicides, examines connections between misogyny, authoritarianism, and right-wing extremism through an epistemological lens on abortion. Previously, she worked as a journalist, translator, and editor in Mexico, Guatemala, and New York.

Kolboske's recent publications explore institutional gender hierarchies, workforce structures, and transnational scientific practices. Her 2024 book Hierarchies: The Max Planck Society in Gender Trouble provides a critical analysis of gender roles within the society using open-access frameworks.
