Birgit Hopfener is an Associate Professor of Art History at Carleton University in Ottawa, cross-appointed to the Institute for Comparative Studies in Literature, Art and Culture (ICSLAC) and holds the Ruth and Mark Phillips Professorship. Her research and teaching focus on critical global art history, with a specialization in Chinese art and contemporary art within a global framework.
Her work bridges art history, cultural theory, image studies (Bildwissenschaft), and Sinology, informed by her fluency in German, English, and Chinese and experiences across academic systems in Canada, China, Germany, and Switzerland. She investigates transcultural historiographies and epistemologies in contemporary art, particularly how temporal regimes and geopolitical dynamics shape artistic practices.
Her publications include a monograph on installation art in China and co-edited books exploring global art frameworks. Supported by SSHRC grants, she co-initiated the international network TrACE, which received a Social Innovation Grant. Her current book project examines works by Chinese artists Qiu Zhijie, Li Ran, and Liu Ding.
