Birger Vanwesenbeeck is a Professor of English at the State University of New York at Fredonia since 2007, previously teaching at Université Laval (Québec), University at Buffalo, and a Belgian high school. A polyglot, he speaks Flemish, French, Turkish, and reads German and Latin, publishing in English and Dutch. His research focuses on literary theory, American literature, world literature, and the works of Stefan Zweig.
Vanwesenbeeck’s academic contributions span critical essays on translation studies, Derridian theory, and cultural history. Notable works include analyses of Willa Cather’s My Ántonia, Zweig’s correspondence with Léon Spilliaert, and Flaubert’s Madame Bovary. He has presented at major conferences like the Annual ACLA and Utrecht University, and contributed to media outlets like Inside Higher Ed and Fredonia Radio.
His awards include a National Endowment of the Humanities Summer Stipend (2019), Fulbright Senior Lecturer role (2018), and William T. and Charlotte N. Hagan Award (2017). Research grants include the Scaliger Fellowship at Leiden University (2015) and a National Humanities Center stipend (2013).
