Birger Sevaldson is a Professor affiliated with the Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO), Norway, and co-founder of the Systemic Design Association (SDA). He collaborates closely with OCAD University, Toronto, where he helped anchor the Strategic Innovation Lab (sLab). His work focuses on advancing systemic design as an integrative discipline combining systems thinking with design practices.
Research interests include complexity visualization (via gigamapping), socio-technical systems design, and strategic innovation frameworks. He co-organizes the annual Relating Systems Thinking to Design (RSD) symposium and has published seminal works on systemic design methodologies. He advocates for ethical and accountable design practices addressing societal challenges like urbanization and healthcare systems.
Professional contributions include co-founding the SDA in 2011 alongside Peter Jones, Harold Nelson, and Alex Ryan. His collaborations bridge academia and industry through initiatives like the SDA Newsletter and global symposia. He has advised on systemic design education and policy innovation for governments including Elections Canada and Alberta's policy groups.
