Birger Hansen is an Associate Professor at the Department of Geography and Geology, University of Copenhagen. His research focuses on physical geography, climatology, and Arctic ecosystems, with extensive fieldwork in Greenland, Svalbard, and Northern Scandinavia. He holds a Ph.D. in physical geography from the University of Copenhagen.
Education:
- M.Sc. in Physical Geography (1985)
- Ph.D. in Physical Geography (1991)
Research Interests: Birger Hansen specializes in energy exchange between ecosystems and the atmosphere, with emphasis on vegetation classification, biomass production, and snow cover dynamics in Arctic environments. His work integrates remote sensing, GIS modeling, and field observations to study climate impacts and ecosystem responses.
Recent Research Trends: His recent articles emphasize Arctic climate modeling, soil carbon dynamics, and the application of remote sensing in understanding ecosystem feedbacks. Key themes include snow redistribution effects, land surface energy budgets, and geohazard analysis in polar regions.
Grants & Supervision: He has led projects funded by Danish Natural Science Research Council and the Danish Environmental Protection Agency, focusing on Arctic landscapes and climate processes. He has supervised 25 M.Sc. and 5 Ph.D. projects, currently advising 2 M.Sc. and 1 Ph.D. students.
Labs & Collaborations: As GeoBasis-manager, he oversees the Zackenberg and Nuuk Arctic research programs. His work involves international collaborations, including the Zackenberg Ecological Research Operations and FLUXNET initiatives.
