Dr. William Terrill is a Professor in the School of Criminology & Criminal Justice and Associate Dean of Interdisciplinary and Academic Programming at Arizona State University's Watts College of Public Service & Community Solutions. His academic career spans over 25 years with affiliations at institutions like Michigan State University and Northeastern University. He holds a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from Rutgers University and undergraduate degrees from Penn State.
His research focuses on policing strategies, police use of force, and organizational culture, with notable studies on officer perceptions of danger, body-worn camera analysis, and racial disparities in policing outcomes. Dr. Terrill has advised federal agencies like the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC) and contributed to President Obama’s 2015 Task Force on 21st Century Policing. He currently co-edits Policing: A Journal of Policy and Practice and serves on multiple editorial boards.
His publications emphasize video-based observational methods and de-escalation tactics, reflecting a commitment to evidence-based policing reforms. Awards include Penn State’s Alumni Achievement Award (2014–15) and Rutgers’ Richard J. Hughes Award (1994). Teaching responsibilities include graduate seminars in criminal justice and policing.
