Bill Barnes is a Professor of Photonics at the School of Physics and Astronomy, University of Exeter, and holds the Chair of Complex Plasmonics at the University of Twente in the Netherlands.
- BSc and PhD in Physics from the University of Exeter (1983, 1986)
- Research focuses on light-matter interactions, particularly with molecules, and spans quantum physics, nanotechnology, and photonics
- Current ERC Advanced Grant holder and former Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award holder
His interdisciplinary work spans Condensed matter physics, Classical physics, Physical chemistry, and Electronics, sensors and digital hardware, among others.
Scientific honors include:
- Thomas Young Medal and Prize (2019)
- Fellow of the Institute of Physics (2019)
- Fellow of the Optical Society of America (2008)
- Royal Society Wolfson Merit Award (2004)
He has held academic positions at the University of Exeter since 1992 and the University of Twente since 2013.
