Bilge Mutlu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Sciences at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he also holds affiliate appointments in the Departments of Psychology and Industrial & Systems Engineering, the Eye Research Institute, and the Morgridge Institute for Research. He directs the Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory and leads a prolific, interdisciplinary research program spanning human-computer interaction, human-robot interaction, and computer-supported cooperative work.

Research Focus:
Mutlu’s scholarship centers on designing social, adaptive, and persuasive behaviors for robots and embodied agents. His work integrates insights from psychology, design, and engineering to create technologies that support education, collaboration, health, and well-being. Representative themes include gaze-based communication, proxemics, motivational feedback, engagement monitoring, and curriculum learning in both human-robot and human-agent contexts.
Recent Publication Trends:
Between 2024 and 2025, Mutlu and his teams have produced a rapid succession of studies at the intersection of large-language-model-driven interaction, family-centered and intergenerational robotics, accessibility for neurodiverse and aging populations, privacy-aware design, and telepresence systems. Collectively, these works advance both theoretical understanding and practical deployment of socially interactive robots in real-world, multi-user settings.

Advising & Funding:

Laboratory & Teams:
He founded and directs the Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory at UW-Madison, a hub for interdisciplinary projects that integrate robotics, machine learning, psychology, and design to create socially intelligent technologies.
