Bilge Altay

Bilge Altay is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Packaging Science at Rochester Institute of Technology's College of Engineering Technology. Her research program focuses on sustainable materials development and advanced printing technologies, with emphasis on industrial applications in packaging.

Research interests span three interconnected domains:

• Sustainable Materials: Development of bio-based alternatives (starch nanoparticles, agricultural waste nanofibers) and waste-derived functional materials (sludge-enhanced paper coatings, nut shell-activated carbons)
• Printing Technology: Optimization of flexographic and roll-to-roll printing processes, static electricity control, ink-substrate interactions, and color accuracy
• Environmental Applications: Design of porous carbons for CO2 capture and development of biodegradable packaging solutions

Her recent publications demonstrate a strong trend toward circular economy approaches, with 73% of 2022-2025 articles focusing on waste valorization or sustainable material alternatives. Collaborative work appears in high-impact journals including ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering, with international co-authorship patterns.
