Bhaskar Sen Gupta is a Professor at Heriot-Watt University's School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society, and a member of the Institute for Infrastructure & Environment. He specializes in environmental remediation, particularly contaminated water and soil treatment, with a focus on low-cost sustainable solutions for developing countries. His work includes groundbreaking arsenic remediation techniques and international projects across India, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Chile, and Mexico.
Research Interests: His expertise spans environmental engineering, sustainable water treatment, soil remediation, and the development of eco-friendly technologies like deep eutectic solvents. He has pioneered chemical-free subsurface arsenic removal systems, earning global acclaim and awards such as the OBE (2012), IChemE Ambani Prize (2009), St Andrews Prize for the Environment (2010), and Energy Globe Award (2011).
Key Projects: Includes the Subterranean Arsenic Removal (SAR) plant in Tepul Village, Bangladesh, and eco-climatological studies of Chilika Lake in India. His recent work explores solvent-based solutions for biodiesel purification, soil metal immobilization, and CO₂ sequestration.
Awards: Over 15 years of recognition include Northern Ireland’s first All-Party Development Award (2013), Green Apple Award (2012), and contributions to UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 6, 13, 15). He supervises PhD students and collaborates internationally on environmental sustainability challenges.
