Betty Barrett is a Professor at the University of Windsor’s Faculty of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, Department of Social Work. Her research focuses on intersections of domestic violence, animal abuse, and social policy. She has pioneered studies on how companion animals influence help-seeking behaviors in victims of intimate partner violence (IPV), leading to policy changes in pet-inclusive shelter services. Her work also addresses LGBTQ+ health disparities, police response to IPV, and transformative pedagogies in social work education.
Dr. Barrett’s contributions were recognized with the 2023 Alumni Award for Distinguished Contributions to University Teaching. She collaborates with researchers like Amy Fitzgerald and Patti Timmons Fritz on federally funded projects, including the New Frontiers Research Project on IPV during the pandemic. Her studies have been featured in high-impact journals and informed anti-violence initiatives in Canada and the U.S.
Notable achievements include demonstrating that animal maltreatment correlates with severe IPV, and advocating for trans-inclusive healthcare access. She has secured grants to expand research on femicide prevention in Windsor-Essex and co-developed the Partner’s Treatment of Animals Scale (PTAS) to assess abuse dynamics.
