Bettine Siertsema is a Visiting Fellow at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam’s Faculty of Humanities, Art and Culture, History, Antiquity. She holds a PhD in Dutch Language and Literature (2007) and specializes in Holocaust literature, theology, Dutch poetry, and oral histories. Her research explores ethical and religious dimensions of Holocaust narratives, including perpetrator representation and survivor testimonies. She teaches Media Ethics and The Holocaust: History and Memory courses.
Education:
- Bachelor’s (cum laude) in Dutch Language and Literature, VU Amsterdam
- PhD in Dutch Language and Literature (2007), VU Amsterdam
Research Interests: Focuses on Holocaust literature, Dutch literary representations of concentration camps, female perpetrators, and theological aspects of trauma. She also studies Dutch poets like Martinus Nijhoff and Ida Gerhardt.
Awards & Activities: Participated in the Summer Institute of the Holocaust Education Foundation (Northwestern University, 2008). Active in academic conferences and public lectures on Holocaust memory. Collaborated on projects like the VHA testimonies of Amsterdam’s Diamond Jews.
Teaching & Engagement: Co-teaches The Holocaust: History and Memory with Dr. D.G. Hondius. Engages in public outreach as a freelance preacher at Ekklesia Amsterdam, linking academic research to contemporary religious discourse.
