apl. Prof. Dr. Bettina Zeis is an Associate Professor at the University of Münster, Faculty of Biology, where she leads research on zooplankton adaptation to environmental changes. She is affiliated with the Institute of Integrative Cell Biology and Physiology (IIZP) and serves as Professorship representative. Her work focuses on understanding molecular mechanisms of environmental adaptation using Daphnia as a model organism.
Dr. Zeis received her education at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf:
- 1984-1989: Diploma in Biology
- 1990-1994: Doctorate
- 1998-2017: Habilitation
Her research program centers on the molecular principles of environmental adaptation and acclimation in zooplankton organisms, particularly Daphnia. Using an integrative approach that combines molecular, cellular, and organismal analyses, she investigates how these organisms respond to stressors like temperature changes, oxygen availability, and pollution. Her laboratory employs techniques from protein biochemistry, physiology, ecology, and evolutionary biology to understand the organization and control of protein networks underlying specific biological processes.
Analysis of Dr. Zeis's recent publications reveals a consistent focus on thermal adaptation mechanisms in Daphnia species. Her work spans molecular analyses of hemoglobin function, metabolic adjustments to temperature stress, and the impacts of environmental pollutants like microplastics under changing thermal conditions. A notable trend is her exploration of how multiple stressors interact, particularly examining how temperature fluctuations affect responses to other environmental challenges.
Dr. Zeis has received recognition for her contributions to academia:
- Women's Advancement Award of the WWU Münster (2005)
As an active researcher and educator, Dr. Zeis has secured multiple research grants, including DFG-funded projects on thermal tolerance mechanisms in Daphnia and urban water ecology. She mentors students through research projects and serves on academic committees. Her teaching portfolio includes advanced modules on aquatic ecology, animal physiology, and molecular stress physiology across bachelor's, master's, and teacher education programs.
Dr. Zeis leads the Zeis Research Group within the Institute of Integrative Cell Biology and Physiology, collaborating closely with colleagues including Dr. Hans-Ulrich Steeger and Dr. Nadine Hoffschröer. The group maintains strong connections with the broader ecological research community at the University of Münster and participates in interdisciplinary initiatives like the Center for Interdisciplinary Sustainability Research (ZIN).
