Betsy Barnhart is an Associate Professor and Program Director of Industrial Design at the University of Kansas's School of Architecture & Design. She leads the Mentored Design Scholars Program (MDSP) and serves as IDSA education liaison for the Kansas City chapter. Her work integrates innovation in design education with industry collaboration, emphasizing equitable outcomes and gender equity in internships.
Education: MFA in Industrial Design from Rochester Institute of Technology (2007). Professional experience includes 15+ years in sporting goods design and patent development, focusing on materials science and user-driven solutions.
Research interests span design education reform, gender disparities in industry participation, and advancements in athletic equipment through emerging technologies. Her recent studies highlight internship gender gaps and pandemic-driven pedagogical adaptations in 3D modeling.
Articles collectively address design education equity (gender-focused), global health interventions (anti-venom systems), and sports equipment innovation. Over 15 patents reflect her industry-academia bridge.
