Bethany Cobb Kung is an Associate Professor of Honors and Physics at the George Washington University (GW). She earned her Ph.D. in Astrophysics from Yale University in 2008 and conducted postdoctoral research at the University of California, Berkeley, as an NSF Astronomy & Astrophysics Postdoctoral Fellow (2008–2010). Her academic roles include membership in the Academy of Distinguished Teachers and contributions to teaching reform through committees like the University Teaching and Learning Center Faculty Advisory and Support Team.
Research Interests:
- Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and their progenitors, focusing on optical/infrared observations to study black hole formation and supernova associations (e.g., SN 2009nz).
- Time-domain astronomy, including the 2017 optical/IR follow-up of the first gravitational wave source (binary neutron star merger) linked to a GRB, which shed light on heavy metal formation in the universe.
- Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, particularly exploring how integrating Citizen Science in classrooms impacts student engagement and understanding of scientific processes.

Teaching & Institutional Contributions: Dr. Kung has facilitated GW's Course Design Institutes (2016–2018) and co-designed curricula to enhance rigorous teaching practices.
