Dr. Bethan Loftus is a Reader in Criminology and Criminal Justice at Bangor University, within the School of History, Law and Social Sciences. She has held prestigious roles including ESRC and Leverhulme Trust grants, a Simon Fellowship at the University of Manchester, and prior affiliations with the University of Oxford and Manchester's School of Law.
Education:
- PhD in Criminology, Keele University
- MA in Comparative Criminology and Criminal Justice (Bangor University, Distinction)
- BA in Criminology and Criminal Justice (Bangor University, First Class)
Research Interests: Focuses on policing cultures, covert operations, private security governance, border enforcement, AI in law enforcement, and violence studies. Her work combines ethnographic field studies and policy analysis, with key projects addressing the migration/refugee crisis and non-fatal strangulation.
Publications & Projects: Authored Police Culture in a Changing World (Oxford UP), co-edited Ethnography and the Evocative World of Policing, and contributed to journals like British Journal of Criminology. Current projects include evaluating the ADAPT programme and exploring AI ethics in policing with North Wales Police.
