Dr. Beth Rose Middleton Manning is a Professor of Native American Studies at the University of California, Davis. She holds a B.A. in Nature and Culture from UC Davis and a Ph.D. in Environmental Science, Policy, and Management from UC Berkeley. Her research focuses on Native environmental policy, climate adaptation, Indigenous land stewardship, and Afro-indigeneity. She has authored two influential books and contributes to interdisciplinary projects on tribal environmental leadership and policy.
Dr. Middleton Manning teaches courses such as NAS 030 (Homeland History), NAS 161/162 (California Indian Environmental Policy), and NAS 240 (Native American Public Health). She collaborates with Native Nations on initiatives like dam removal, cultural burning, and environmental health studies, supported by grants from the Carnegie Fellows Program, US Forest Service, and others. She also serves on non-profit boards like the Sierra Institute and the California Rural Indian Health Board's IRB.
Her work emphasizes community-driven environmental justice, Indigenous sovereignty, and bridging historical trauma with contemporary policy solutions. She mentors graduate students and postdocs across multiple disciplines, fostering interdisciplinary approaches to environmental challenges.
