Her research centers on early childhood education with emphasis on the interplay between literacy and language development, evidence-based preschool curriculum design, professional development for early educators, and family learning influences. Current projects include longitudinal studies of classroom language environments and tiered intervention efficacy.
Dr. Phillips leads multiple federally funded initiatives:
- Project VOICES (PI, Spencer Foundation): Analyzing co-created language environments in preschool classrooms
- ATLAS (Co-PI): Evaluating small-group vocabulary interventions for preschool/kindergarten
- Reading for Understanding Network (2010-present): Developing evidence-based literacy interventions
- Learning Disabilities Research Center (2011-2017): Co-investigator on longitudinal studies
She previously directed IES-funded vocabulary intervention development for at-risk preschoolers and Florida's Voluntary Pre-K (VPK) technical assistance program. Her graduate lab actively mentors MS/PhD students researching teacher-student interactions and instructional methodologies while she consults with state education agencies on early childhood policy.
